Thankful Thursday, June 29

Woke up at 3:17 and only dozed off and on, so finally got up at 5:30. Tried to think of the last minute stuff. Trev called while I was in the shower so Bob had a chat with him. Joanne called and then Vicki, so it was great to hear from them with their good wishes. Chris, Claudine and Rebecca arrived and Blaine and Diane shortly after...and I wasn't quite ready and was running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. Luckily Claudine and Diane both calmed me and took over the chores that I was rushing to get done. Bev came over while we loaded the cars..it was a nice farewell and I was feeling quite emotional. The day had finally arrived!! Chris and Rebecca took the bikes and suitcases while Blaine and Di had offered to drive us, which was really nice. Got to the airport just after 9 and checked in. They had to open our well packed bike boxes to do a search with the wand. Luckily they didn't have to move or take the bikes out so it was just a quick reseal of the box lid. Bonus for us in that we were not charged for the oversized boxes. Both Iva and Marci called regarding the eye drops that I had forgotton to get from Iva. Marci offered to drive them out to the airport, but changed her tune when I told her that I was at the Moncton airport!! I will make arrangements for them to send them on the a General Delivery Post Office, perhaps in Canmore. Teary farewell to Chris....and then we were on board. I didn't realize when I booked the flight that the plane was stopping in Toronto....now that was an adventure seeing that the area was being hit with lightning strikes. The plane circled the airport for about 20 minutes and then we were cleared to come in. At times it felt like we were riding a mechanical bucking bronco, not a feeling I want to repeat. We did land safely. Then the plane was held up due to more lightning strikes as the workers are called off and have to wait a certain period before they can resume. We left almost 45 minutes late. Trip to Calgary was ok. I tried to doze, watched TV, some of the tennis and golf, and also did some reading. Flight from Calgary to Victoria was beautiful with the scenery. Still snow in the mouttains. Skies sunny and bright and arrived in Victoria to lovely sunshine and warmth. The bikes arrived along with our luggage and we met Bruce Kempt who picked us and another member, John Johnson from Barrie up. We drove out to Butchart Gardens to retrieve 6 members who had arrived the previous day. I was just about wiped,. but it was great to meet some of the members. Then it was on to Knox Presbyterian church where we would be lodging. We called and left a message with Aaron as we were trying to connect. Bob and I picked a spot in the basement and set up our quarters, on the floor. Then we went to the main room to assemble our bikes. Aaron called and we gave him directions and he joined us about 10 minutes later. He had hitched and the driver who picked him up brought him right to the door. Bonus. It was great to see him. We fiddled with the bikes, but as we were all wiped we finally went to bed. It was 10 BC time, but 2 am our time and I had been up for almost 23 hours!!

Friday

Woke up at 2 BC time and dozed off and on until we got up at 7 to glorious sunshine. We were on a bus and downtown by 9. Great city. Aaron led us to a place for breakfast and then we spent the next 6 hours wandering around, playing tourist. We went to Mountain Equipment where I purchased a pillow and sheet having forgotton mine at home. We just left Aaron at the bus station as he will take the bus to the ferry leaving from Nanaimo. He finds it easier to get to the highway from that one to hitch back to Whistler. It was wonderful to see him and spend the day together. I

I found an internet cafe to write this. PLEASE NOTE....Jean, Joyce, Diane, Christopher, Mom, Trevor, Vicki, Joanne, Wendy, that my little pocket mail device has malfunctioned and I have lost everyone's address. For those who want to correspond with me, please write to me at the pocket mail address and so I can copy down your addresses again. I am going to fiddle with the machine to see if we can send, but thus far I haven't been successful. I may have to call for assistance.
Bob is getting leary and we should get back,if we can find our way, to the church where we are staying. I am anxious to get to know the members of the team that have already arrived.
Tomorrow Bob and I want to cycle the other end of Victoria, out towards Sannich.
Hopefully I can get the pocket mail machine operating again.....

Worrying Wednesday

I woke up at the usual 4:47, about the time the robins begin their singing. Luckily I dozed off until 6:30. I called my mom to wish her and dad a Happy 59th wedding anniversary!! Amazing. My dad goes in to Halifax on Friday for a knee replacement, his second. He is quite a remarkable individual at 82. He has had two hip replacements, one knee replacement, two heart (pig) valve replacements, two rotator cuffs done....and enjoyed this past winter playing tennis in Florida!!!

I was feeling antzy, worried about the bike boxes, would they fit in Judy's Element. Would we all be able to fit. Fortunately Chris called regarding the measurements and Bob persuaded him to come to the house for a "dry run"...just to ensure that things would fit. They managed to load them, but not the way Chris had first figured. But, they fit. The ride for to the airport in Moncton WILL NOT be comfortable for Rebecca( Chris and Claudine's friend), who is also catching a flight out of Moncton, and I. I spent the morning arranging, re-arranging, doing laundry, packing, sorting etc. I then called Diane and we went for a walk. At one point I was just feeling overwhelmed and actually broke down...worrying about my cats, missing my dog, but actually I think that all the preparation for the trip has finally caught up with me and I am a tad worn out. I also have been thwarting off a sore throat by gargling and taking echinechea. Hopefully air conditioning and stale air on the plane will not make me sick.

I received a phone call from Doreen, a member of ST. Peter's Mothers' Union in Quamichan, Duncan, BC. Their group had their closing this week and Peg read my letter to them. Doreen mentioned that they would like to get together, if possible, so I gave her the addresses of the churches where we will be and invited them to come to commissioning service to be held on July 1. Doreen mentioned that she and her husband would like to come to see us begin the tour where we dip our tires in the Pacific Ocean. It was lovely to chat with her. Their branch seems quite active and their membership has grown which is great news. I wish I could say the same about our branch here at St. Luke's. WE have been in abeyance for a few years. You never know, perhaps we can find a renewed interest to get our branch active once more.

I went to Diane's for a game of scrabble. I got my butt kicked....this is Diane's fourth win in a row, and our last game for the summer. Not the way I wanted it to end!! Oh well, look out in the fall Di..... I will be back with a vengence.

I scrubbed out the compose bucket, put away laundry and just puttered here there and everywhere. Bob mowed the grass and then we set off to town to meet with Chris and Claudine for dinner. Rebecca joined us as well and we had a lovely meal at Sebastian's. It was very peaceful and relaxing and I enjoyed myself. My stess level seemed to come down.

Blaine called to say that he and Di would take Bob and I to the airport and Chris could take the bikes. That will make the drive more comfortable for us. They hope to stop in Moncton to bring their grand-daughter Rebecca back with them for a few days visit.

Bev and Peter came over to wish us well and we chatted. They just returned from Ottawa and are still on vacation until Monday.

One last turn on the computer, one last check at my suitcase....and purse. Hard to believe that we will be off in the morning. Our trek is soon to begin.

Thank you to our friends who has been so supportive with pledges, prayers, good wishes and offers of help in many ways. Bob and I really appreciate everything.

Tuesday, June 27

Little Buddy tried to get me up around 5:30 and I hollered that "it's to early". He settled back down and I drifted off until just after 7. Wow, that is sleeping in!! I was hoping for a sunny day, but not to be. Bob spent the morning out in the shed working on the bikes, changing tires etc. I went to the post office, CIBC to deposit a cheque for Jordive, and then stopped in at "Town and Country Quilts" to see Tina. The knitting store, Cricket Cove, has moved from our location into the city Market. There is a quietness now in the store without Liz and I am sure that Tina misses her. I watched the store so Tina could pick up her pup, Mia, who was getting her first "grooming". Tina brought her back for me to see...she was shaved, with a fluff ball for her tail which she kept chasing. I then went to Bikes and Beans to pick up rim tape and brake pads for Bob.

I organized my suitcase again; and it seems never ending. The "carry on" bag that I intend to use on the plane is actually the bag that fits on my bike to carry tools, tubes, all the things that I will need during the day's ride. I had to remember to take my multi tool from the carry on and put it in the luggage as it most likely would be conviscated when I go through the x-ray and search procedure.

Had a game of scrabble with Diane this afternoon. We are both competitive, and it is interesting to see the score go back and forth. This afternoon we were tied at the last round, but I had a "v" which I couldn't place anywhere thus Diane ended up winning.

I came home close to 5 and Bob was pruning some bushes. My gardens are so neglected. The weather has prevented me from getting much accomplished. I feel badly leaving them unattended for so long, and by the time we get back from our trip they will be totally overgrown. Next year will definitly be a challenge. We finally picked a spot for Jessi and buried her ashes. It made me sad to think of such a "lacklustre" ending to what was such a beautiful and loving pet. Little Buddy arrived on the scene to take part, walking over the hole and mound of earth. I do believe he knew what was going on. Yaga remained on the deck, observing. Little Buddy came in for dinner but didn't eat, not even his tuna....he was/is acting rather strangely!!! I am sure he misses Jessi as well.

Bob and I arrived at Bikes and Beans for 6 as we planned an early ride with Carole and intended to finish the evening by boxing our bikes for the trip. The weather was iffy...drizzle at times with clouds looming overhead. Marci advised that if we were going to box the bikes then they shouldn't be soaked....so, we contemplated "should we ride or not". Margret arrived and greeted us and said "it's not going to rain". So, on that note, Bob, Carole and I headed out. We did the Hammond River loop and came back up Stockfarm and down Elliot Road, back to the highway and back to the store. The weather was good. Rain held off and it was a pleasant ride. The "Quick Chicks" arrived back around 8:20. Sonya, Lisa, Margret, Cheryl, Barb, Dorothy, dropped inside to wish us well on our trip. There were several new gals whom I didn't know. Marci and Bob worked on dismantling the bikes and boxing them. Iva, Carole and I chatted about kitchen and bathroom renovations. Carole drove the boxed bikes home in her truck and I tagged along. She has kindly given me a "computer" for my bike....so a part of her will be making the trip with me.

Super Sunny Sunday

Didn't do any cycling yesterday, but Bob did get his bike tuned ( by Bill, the owner) at Darling's Island Bike shop. I purchased another computer for my bike but IT DOES NOT WORK...so on MOnday, a return visit. This is getting discouraging. I am not impressed with "Cat Eye" computers!!
Sunday it was sort of misty and humid when we set off for church. I was Layreading thsi morning and the service seemed longer than usual. I was trying to gaze through the beautiful stained glass windows to see if the weather was improving. OUr church (St. Luke's in Gondola Point) is a "National Historic Site", a beautifully restored small country church with wonderful stained glass windows. I was told that besides the beauty of the stained glass they restrict the the view when trying to gaze outside...I supposed to keep one's attention during a sermon, etc. Luckily today the door at the back was open and I could clearly see the sun beginning to shine!! We were late leaving as we stayed behind to chat with our friends as this was our final Sunday before we head off to Victoria. Our church family has been so supportive of our upcoming venture, both financially and with their good wishes and prayers. We appreciate everything that they have done for us!!

I made a brunch and then it was on our bikes and off by 12:30. We were up on the Vincent Road when I discovered that I had forgotton a spare tube. Bob went back to get it and I continued on our planned route. I got to the top of Stockfarm and ran into Sonya and Gretchen who were taking a cycling break. We chatted while waiting for Bob. Bob and I continued on through the Hammond River, to Titusville and then out through Saltsprings to Norton. We stopped to share a popsicle. The weather was quite humid and although it doesn't seem to affect me when cycling, the heat certainly catches up when you are stopped. I was soaked with perspiration and it was dripping into my eyes!! We headed back along to Kredyl's in Hampton where we replenished our water and then onward through the Lower Norton Shore Rd, to Ketchum and up to the Hill Road. The scenery at the top is lovely. I am hoping to post the picture of a mother cow and her calf that were running along besides us, our fans. It was a push to get home as we were to meet Glen and Dorothy at Vito's for dinner at 6. We were still on the ferry to Gondola Point at 5:35...needless to say it was a quick spin from the ferry to home (6 km) and then into the shower and back out the door. We were only 10 minutes late.

We were surprised to see Dana, Nadine, Gary, Carole, Barb as well as Glen and Dorothy. It was nice to be with our cycling friends to celebrate our "farewell" dinner. Thank's Glen and Dorothy for arranging it!! Gary had done the Saint John Triathalon that morning and he did well, bettering the time he had anticipated, so was rather pleased with himself...and we were pleased for him. Way to go.

Fidgety Friday, June 23

Today was a gray day, in more ways than one. The weather, my mood...just couldn't get motivated. I did spend time in the office, first updating and revising the banking and then I did Jordive work. I went through the invoices, paying bills, sorting and filing everything. I have prepared a booklet with procedures on EVERYTHING for Ron, as he will have to handle things while I am away. Now that's a scary thought!! We arranged to meet on Sunday night. His partner, Tracey, will most likely end up handling the business while I am away.

Jessi's ashes came back last night. I will admit that I felt rather an "odd" sensation, a morbid feeling, when I looked at the sealed box. We intend to bury her ashes in our back yard, where she loved to roam, but the ground is too wet right now. Later in the morning I picked up the box, held it tight and cried. I actually was holding her, still tight to my chest and fell asleep. Even though it was only for about an hour, it was the most peaceful sleep that I have had in a long time!!!

I did try to do some packing, but I must be ADHD because I flitted from one thing, interrupted by another and eventually went over to Diane's where she whoomped me at a game of scrabble.

I got an e-mail from Adelar Boudreau who is a friend of Joan MacDonald's. He cycled Canada a few years ago so has been following my blog. He lives in Shediac and wanted our itinery for the night we stop over there. I look forward to meeting him.

We picked up Donnie and Joyce and headed into Christopher's gallery (The Third Space) for the opening of a new exhibit. Former Saint John and current Brooklyn, NY-based artist Michael Buckland with his installation I fooled the children of the revolution, an exhibition comprised of painted graphics, video, and custom made beach balls. The imagery, painted directly on gallery walls, includes angry militant cattle, the intersection of black power with a seventies sitcom, illustrations from a do-it-yourself weapons manual, and various exhortations to action.

I do believe that it was the first time that Don and Joyce had seen something like this. They had always considered that art was comprised of Paintings..... I think they are still trying to get their heads around the "expressive" art which they saw.
We then went down to the Happinezz Wine bar and had a pleasant evening. Chris and Claudine joined us for a bit later on. We then left for "dessert" stopping at the Dolan Road Irving, but I actually had bacon and eggs!! I felt like "comfort" food....hence the eggs.

No training today, as the rain came....with more forecast for the weekend. Hopefully we can fit a few rides in over the next two days!!

Thursday, June 22

Last night was the Wednesday group ride around the Belleisle. The weather was ideal, perfect. Great start for the first day of summer!! Skies were blue, with sun and a slight breeze. Scenery spectacular. We finished just after 8 and Carole stopped to pick up pizza. Gary and Norm joined us as well and we sat outside around our "chiminea", enjoying pizza, beer and the lovely evening.
I went to bed around 11:30 feeling quite tired. I slept until 5 and finally got up at 5:30. There is an emptiness in the house and I miss Jessi. When I walk out of the office I want to stop and pet and kiss my beloved friend, who always lay on the carpet just outside the door. Old habits that became automatic. Before I leave the house I look to the top of the stairs to another of her resting spots to say "I'll be back soon. Pleasant memories. I get a bit weepy from time to time, but I am coping well. I worked on our "banking" for some time this morning. Arranging payment of bills for the next 10 weeks, hoping that I have all things covered!! Just realized that I had forgotton August's Visa payments, both accounts. I Was wondering why the bank book was in the black!! Not now.
I called Darling's Island Bike Shop and Ben Blakney answered. He said that he could service my bike while I waited. So, I set off around 9:30. Weather was nice, warm with a gusty wind. I decided to take the Hammond River loop and always when I get to the fields along the back stretch I have an urge to ride topless, it is such a peaceful setting...wind in your face, etc.. I may have the urge, but I don't have the nerve!! Ben worked on my bike and I chatted with Becky, the owner. I picked up a few other supplies, water bottles, new pump (my third!!...let's hope I don't loose this one!!). Ben did a marvellous job adjusting, cleaning and setting up my bike. I don't ever recall it working this well. Thanks Ben. I wish I could take you along on the trip as my personal mechanic!! Becky joined me for a ride on the way back and we parted company along the Hammond River Road where I stopped to join "John's Girls" for lunch.
Lunch with the girls was fun. Phyllis offered me toast, jam and cheese and made Karen get up wait on me!! Linda makes a pie, coconut cream for the group every week. YUMMY. I ate that first!! At the table were Phyllis, Sandra, Mary, Brenda, Vi, Linda, Jean, Karen, Judy, Evelyn, Juliet. There are many lively conversations taking place at the same time. Phyllis was relaying a story about a relative (78) who had recently visited with her partner (in his 80's) and they got in the jacuzzi and couldn't get out. Then Mary is talking about "locking up" and I don't think she was talking about doors!!. Poor EVelyn is trying to grasp what is going on and says "I'm still back in the jacuzzi". Phyllis' husband, John who is 94, sleeps peacefully throughout the commotion.
I left around 2 and headed for home, enjoying the great performance of my bike and the great weather. Judy joined me later for tea.

First day of summer, June 21

I guess summer begins today, and when you think of summer, you think of blue skies and sunshine. I wish the weatherman could make the fog go away!! Maybe later, today?
Last night was another restless sleep. I woke up at 1:27 This is getting earlier each day. I used to fret when I would wake at 4:30 and be bright eyed and unable to fall back asleep. 1:30 is just too early. I tossed and turned and at 3:47 I was going to come down and work on the computer; I actually sat up making the attempt to get out of bed and thought, perhaps I will try one more time to fall asleep. It worked and I slept until 6. Must be age and hormones. Mind you, last night Bob was restless too and understandably so. At one point I said to him "how do the riders on the Tour de France sleep"?.... I figure with the exercise we get that we should drop off from exhaustion and sleep peacefully!! If I can't settle down in the comfort of my own bed, what am I going to do for the 62 days on the road????
Last night was the weekly ride with the Quick Chicks. I met up with Carole and she mentioned that she wanted to have an easy, peaceful ride so was going to set off before the others. I just wanted a nice pace, so offered to go along. Dorothy joined us as well. We did the Model Farm, Hammond River loop and as we were coming along the McKay Higway I hollered back "want to do Stockfarm and Elliot Road?"...I was only joking but they were in agreement, so I guess I had been taken to task and off we went. It was misty and foggy and when we turned from Elliot Road back to the Highway the wind was quite strong in our faces. It turned out to only be a 29 km ride, but it was pleasant and it is always great to be out on the bike.
We arrived back at Bikes and Beans shortly after the other group and hung out in the store. Iva played hostess whipping up and serving latte and expresso. I chose an ice cream instead. Marci was busy helping some of the gals choose accessoriesfor their bikes. Great idea to be starting and finishing the rides from the store as it must ge a bonus for them and a help to those who can't get out during regular hours. A win win situation for all.
I received two pledges on line yesterday. One from an old friend, Nancy Floyd and another from Kevin Ball. Thanks so much. Kevin is a cyclist who has limited use of his legs so drives a hand powered bike. He set off for a cross Canada tour last year but became seriously ill and ended up back home in hospital. We will keep him in our thoughts daily as we attempt to do this trek. I also received cheques from Jean Foster and Barb Phillips. Thank you.

Tuesday June 20

Jessi(e) December, 1991 –June 20, 2006

Jess, you were born in December, 1991 on Margo’s family, Jenkin’s Ranch, just outside Pincher Creek, Alberta. Your father, Gorbi, was a terrier mix and your mom, Smoke, was a husky. Margo had Christie, a female from an earlier litter and she was only 10 pounds with a lovely face, short body and short legs. Margo called on March 9th, 1992 to say that she had a female pup for me and it would be arriving the following evening. That pup was you. You flew from Cranbrook to Vancouver to Halifax and finally to Saint John. On the date you arrived, I was in the middle of a 4 day, 48 hour work shift at the police station and had been up since 5 am. Your flight didn’t get into Saint John until 10 pm. Oh, how excited we all were, anxiously awaiting your arrival. On the way to the airport, Aaron had named you Daisy. The airport seemed deserted and finally a pilot directed us to your location. Wow, you were beautiful, but as we all said “she isn’t a Daisy”….so, on the way home in the car Trevor named you Jessi. As I had to get up again at 5 the following morning, I went to bed leaving Bob, Trevor and Aaron to settle you into your new environment. At work the following morning Trev called to say he was coming home from school because he had a migraine. I figured he was suffering from a case of pneupuppyitis and wanted to spend the day with you.

You blended into the family with the greatest of ease. I vividly remember taking you to the Paw Shop to pick up some food dishes, food and other supplies. Oh, how proud I was of my 10 pound girl; and although you were only 3 months old, I thought you were full grown!!. The lady at the Paw Shop had great delight in telling me that you would triple your weight and size. I thought she was crazy, but obviously she knew what she was talking about. You look exactly like Christie, the same beautiful face, but did grow to be three times her length and 38 pounds. Obviously you were not going to be a “lap dog”.
The first few months you loved to “run” and we had to be careful if you got out without a leash as you would go in a “running mood”, non stop and race all over. I feared you racing into the street. Once you settled down you were able to be in the yard without a leash and would stay on your own property. The first year as a pup, you loved to dig holes and our back yard became a maze of craters, so we had to be careful that we didn’t sprain ankles if we fell in one!! We figured you must have been part Australian Terrier. You loved to walk…and it got to the point where we had to spell the word because if you heard it, you were up and ready to go. I loved to walk with you and during your 14 years we had a number of walking partners with the most recent and faithful being Diane. I wonder how many thousands of miles you walked in your 14 ½ years!! You didn’t need a leash, you would walk along beside us, very obedient. Aaron had a paper route, you went with him 6 days a week from 1993-1999. On Sunday’s after church we would take you to the trails behind the Gondola Point Recreation Centre; oh, how you loved to race ahead and sniff the wonderful smells. We would play a game of hide and seek and you would always come back to find us.

Bob, Aaron and I were busy and active with mountain bike racing and we would have to travel many weekends. I would hire a pet sitter to care for you. You would always get sort of “sulky” when you saw the suitcases coming out. Then one day when we were packing up the car, and doing a final check of the house, we couldn’t find you….after some searching we found you in the car!!! You certainly let us know that you were ready to come along and be part of the team…. you became well known on the VELO NB circuit. You were a great traveler and a pleasure to take anywhere because you always were very well behaved. I can honestly say I can never remember getting annoyed with you at any time during our time together!!!
About 3 years ago we noticed a change in your behaviour…and realized that you were most likely deaf. This past year has been more difficult with you struggling up and down the stairs and then in March at your vet check up the discovery of a cancerous tumor. Age does not stop and wait….we all become a victim and age seemed to catch up with you. I was hoping to have you stay with Nanny and Poppy this summer while dad and I would be away. I then realized that being away from you for 10 weeks would just be too much. Watching you these past few weeks I knew that I would have to make a tough decision as the growth was becoming large and obviously a nuisance for you.

Yesterday during our talk, hug and cuddle I feel that I made my peace with you and you gave me the go ahead. This morning was the hardest thing that I ever have done. You were my brave girlie right to the end. I held your head in my arms while dad held your body as you peacefully went to sleep. Your memory will always be a part of me and I love you forever Jessi!!

Enclosed is something that my friend Kaye e-mailed to me last week…

The Rainbow Bridge...

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet
goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special
friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water
and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we
remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy
and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special
to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops
and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body
quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green
grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy
kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and
you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from
your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Monday, June 19

Chris and Claudine came out for supper yesterday and stayed overnight. We watched "The Tripilets of Belleville". Chris mentioned viewing it in the bar as a "fund raiser" for the Bike for Bibles tour. That would be fun.

I slept fairly well last night and Jessi didn't wake us at the usual 5:30. Bob got a ride to work with Bev and Peter and I took Chris and Claudine in for 10. Bob and I were meeting with our lawyer to update wills and add Power of Attorney. From there it was on to Sears where I did find flip flops for Bob and I. Next to Cleve's to check out sports bras. No go. Arrived at Vito's to meet members of the ACW for their closing. It was pleasant. On to Bikes and Beans to check for a new computer and also put aside some cycling socks and two more tubes which I will pick up on tomorrow after the Ladies night ride. Sonya was at the store and she had cycled over on her spiffy one speed orange cruiser. Nice bike. On to see Jean but she wasn't home, so I came home to spend some time with Jessi. We had a good cuddle, and a talk and then I took her for a walk to the mail and on to visit with Diane.

Joan MacDonald called too say that she had a friend who cycled Canada a few years ago and that he had been reading my blog. He e-mailed her to advise me not to become overly concerned about how fast our KPH was as it could interfere mentally with the enjoyment of each day. Good advice thanks.

Bob and I did the Stockfarm, Hammond River, Smithtown Covered bridge to Damascus to Elliot Rd and then Meenan's cove to home. It is a 52 km ride. We came to an accident at the intersection of Meenan's and the Arterial. Lots of police cars, fire trucks and ambulance. Traffic was backed up for quite a distance.

Sunny Saturday, June 18

I woke up at 2:37 and I really didn't fall back to sleep. I just seemed to toss and turn and couldn't doze off. Bob got up with Jess at 5:30 and she was back in the bedroom trying to stir us around 6:30. I think I was just feeling like falling back to sleep at that time!! Frustrating. I did get up. It was so beautiful outside with the sun shining and blue skies. I opened the windows. First job of the day was cleaning out the litter box.....next was vacuuming the house and then cleaning the bathrooms. Bob went out to clean up the bikes. Last night when we cycled we realized that the bikes hadn't beec cleaned since the rain on the Wednesday ngiht ride. There was sand and grit in variousl locations. He also was going to insall my new computer which he picked up at Alternatives from Simon on Friday. I also asked him to hook up the two new water bottles to the fitting to go behind my seat and also the front saddle bag. He came in the house about 40 minutes later, a little annoyed. Apparently there was NO battery in the computer which Simon had sold him. Obviously removed for some other customer and NOT replaced. To add insult to injury, the new saddle bag which is a great idea is of poor design. The bag is suitable, but the fitting rolls around and does not stay tight. Then as we were driving, I lost one a water bottle out of the new cage as I drove off the ferry, spilling the entire contents. The bottles don't seem to fit snug in the cages. DOESN'T ANYTHING WORK PROPERLY THESE DAYS!!!
As it was a beautiful day we decided that we would do the 6 ferry ride. We didn't leave home until close to noon. We crossed the Gondola Point ferry and cycled up through the Belleisle, crossing the Belleisle Ferry and then cycled through Kars to Evandale ferry, crossing over to route 102. That is a treat, as the pavement is so smooth....no chip seal there! We then take the Hampstead ferry back across to Wickham and then on to MacDonald Point to visit with our neighbours, Bev and Peter who were at their summer camp. It is a beautiful spot, right on the water.
They were down relaxing on the beach when we interrupted them. I had taken my bathing suit, so waded in the water. At first touch it appeared cold, very cold, but as I waded and stood, it seemed to warm up and eventually I "ducked". It was quite refreshing. We stayed to eat with Bev and Peter and left the table at 5:30 for the trip home. Man, what an awful feeling trying to cycle on a full stomach. For the entire ride home the wind was strong in our face which does slow down our pace and really drains me. I was beginning to feel punchy and tired by the time we got to the Gagnon Rd, so we stopped for a granola bar. That seemed to perk me up somewhat and we continued on to home. Today's ride was 113.62 and we did it in 5 hours 28 minutes cycling tme. Today, I reached 2001.62 km. on my odomoter for the season.

Fine Friday, June 16

I woke up just after 5 and feeling wide awake got up around 5:20. It must be the rising sun that made me feel so alive....it was beautiful outside. Fed animals, did a laundry and played on the "pocket mail" machine, becoming more familiar and sent a message to Jean just to ensure that everything is working ok. Made lunches for Bob and I, as I am working today. My sister, Vicki, called this morning and we had a lovely long chat. Before I knew it, I was running late. I ate my breakfast on the run, had a quick shower and donned my biking gear to cycle to work. As I was rushing down the stairs the phone rang and it was Joyce offering a ride to work. I unloaded by work clothes from my backpack and made a quick change. Joyce and Don were on their way to town to look (2nd time back) at a new truck. Wonder if they bought it?? I arrived at work just before 10 and the phone was ringing. There were people in the store on a steady basis. At one point a lady called inquiring about a sewing machine but as I was busy serving customers I told her that I would call her back. I never had the chance....she arrived out to check out the machine herself, just as I was about to cut fabric for another customer who was making a rag quilt. Judy was in the store and busy out back so I had to ask her if she had a minute to help me. She kindly cut the fabric while I attempted to demo the machine. Well, that was an experience. I set the machine up on a display table, plugged in to wall outlet and attached foot pedal. I explained some of the functions from the display panel and attempted to sew. The machine was lit up, display lights on BUT when I hit the foot pedal nothing happened. After several attempts, nothing. So, back to the packing box to unload the manual to read instructions. Everything appeared to be ok....then I realized what was going on.....dhhhh, the foot pedal was still up on the table and I was busily tapping a foot pedal on the floor which was connected to another machine (not plugged in). The lady was obviously quite forgiving, or else convinced that I was an idiot, felt sorry for me and bought the machine out of pity. The store remained busy until around 3:30, which is great for Tina and good for me because the day passes quickly. Bob arrived around 6 and we headed home in the 29 degree temperature to change into biking gear for a ride.
I tried out my new glasses and they took/will take some getting used to. They are progressive lenses, trifocals and at times I felt a bit dizzy. I have to learn to move my head more than my eyes?? I told Bob that I felt like a giant on the bike as the ground seemed so far away....but on a good note, they block the wind and they fit my face so well. There is no movement or shifting when I hit rough ground or bumps. We did the Stockfarm Rd route out to the Smithtown covered bridge (my favourite) and back through Damascus, Meenan's Cove to home. It was a 53 km ride and we were just over 2 hours. We didn't get home until close to 9 and by the time I made a decent supper it was almost 10....not the greatest idea to be eating just before bed!!

Thursday, June 15

The plumber arrived at 10:30 and proceeded to replace our water holding tank and was finished just before noon. Bob had checked with his co workers about a reliable plumber and was told about Maurice, so called him. Maurice came to check out the situation and was back in the morning to do the required work. Most homes here in the valley are all on there own wells, so water issues are a worry. Maurice said the old tank was waterlogged and he said we were lucky that he hadn't sprung a leak. We are pleased to have this fixed before we depart!!
Donnie came back from the parish hall to pick me up to help cater the Senior's Dinner which the ACW were doing. A lovely ham and potato scallop dinner was served, with great pies for dessert. I love helping out as we get a free meal....with more to take home for supper. Yahoo.
I borrowed a tiny "portable e-mail device" machine from our friends, Herb and Jean Foglein, and set up an account through pocketmail. This is a very user friendly machine, VERY small keyboard meant for the two fingered typist, which I will have to become. I actually was able to compose and send an e-mail successfully, without becoming frustrated...that made my day!!!. Although we intend to take our computer with us on the journey, should we have any problems this e-mail device will be what we will use. Our e-mail address for sending and receiving will be:
rjlloyd@pocketmail.com
But, PLEASE do not send photos, junk mail, jokes or attachments to this account. It is for text only.
My new "Hanson" brother's glasses came in so Bob and I went to retrieve them after work. They fit great and I am glad that I decided to get them. I can see!! So, it was a rather $$$$$$ expensive day!!
Last night we went to Joyce and Donnie's house as Bob had the old bike rack and wanted to see if it would fit on their car. We fiddled and decided that it would work. They will be coming to Newfoundland to retrieve us at the end of the journey. We then went on line trying to find accommodations (to bid on for a cheaper rate) for our night in St. John's on September 3rd. We will only have one day to be the tourist in that city as we are booked to return via the Argentia ferry at 1 minute before midnight on September 4.

Wheeling Wednesday, June 14

Diane was teaching a class at the store so I took advantage of a drive and went with her. Jennifer, the new girl, was working today and I thought if things were busy she could use my help. She is more than capable and most likely could teach me a few things!! I did borrow her car to take the cardboard and plastic to the recycling bins. Along the way I stopped at Bikes and Beans to pick up a cheque that Lisa Currer had left for Bob and I. When I opened the envelope I was amazed at her generoisity. Wow, thank you so much Lisa!! When I got back to the store, Pam Mesheau arrived with a donation!! Lucky day!! Thank you Pam. I have reached my $5,000 pledge amount and am now working to help Bob achieve his goal. Hopefully we will surpass the amount we pledged and to ensure the Canadian Bible Society will reach its' goal!! When Bob came home with the mail, there was a generous cheque from my sister, Vicki.....way to go Vick, and thanks!!!

Last night was the Wednesday night ride and 8 showed up. Lynn McLellan was there and I had great fun riding and chatting with her. She cycled across Canada in 2001, so she provided pointers and information with lots of helpful hints. She was very positive and gave me some "mental" tips for when the times get tough. I enjoyed her story and the 3 pound hamburger she ate in Wawa. She has a web site recording her story and trip. You can find it at www.lynnmclellan.com/tdc/

We decided to do our regular 40 km ride along the back of the Belleisle and were hit with rain, what else, along the ride, but it was mild so other than getting wet, it wasn't too bad. We arrived back at the ferry landing just after 8. We didn't bother stopping at the Pub as we knew the kitchen would be "closed". Bob had picked up some steak at the market earlier in the afternoon and we invited Dorothy, Glen, Carole and Barb who were with us at the ferry landing to come for a BBQ. Only Barb took up our offer; Bob fired up the BBQ, and I made baked potatoes, brocolli with cheese sauce, onions and mushrooms. It was nice to get to know Barb better, and we had a nice relaxing conversation over a good meal. Great way to end the day!!

Pledges come True!!. Tuesday June 13, 2006

Today the weather was a mixed bag. Sun, rain, clear, rain, with some humidity to add as well. I cycled to work in the morning before the rain came. Work was steady as we are having a fabric sale this week. Father's DAy sale!! Go figure. NOt many men in picking up fabric!!
Bob arrived for me and after I closed up I had to run into Sobey’s to pick up a few thing for tonight’s Kennebecasis Valley Quilt Guild’s pot luck. It is the guild closing for the summer and we always end with a pot luck dinner. They are great events as the food is super, great variety of dishes and wonderful desserts. Two of the guild members, Joan MacDonald and Lynn Armstrong earlier initiated that a “silent auction” be held during the evening with the proceeds to be directed to Bob and myself for the Bike for Bibles Tour. I was deeply touched and felt honoured that members of the guild would do this in support of our trip. The evening was fun and raised $871.50 which was given to me and will be forwarded to the Canadian Bible Society. I cannot express enough my gratitude to each and everyone who participated to make it a fun and successful event. Thank you to all members!!! I have now reached my goal, raising the required $5,000. Now to help Bob reach his target.
We didn’t get for a ride today….but tomorrow is the club ride and should be fun!!

Monday, June 12, 2006

Well, it wasn't raining when I put Jessi out at 5:30 this morning....mind you, the sun wasn't up yet either.
Yesterday I helped out at a time trial and a road race in Lorneville. It rained, and rained. Then it would stop and appear to get clear only to have the rain start again and it seemed to get heavier each time. There were over 50 riders, who didn't seem to mind the conditions....I was outside for the time trial helping get the riders in sequence. I was soaked. For the road race I drove in the car behind the second pack, keeping track of bib numbers and taking jackets from the riders as they removed them.
Today I baked raisin bread for the auction tomorrow night at the KV Quilt Guild closing. They are holding the auction for Bob and I with the proceeds going towards our Bike for Bibles tour. I was really surprised and feel very grateful in their willingness to do something for Bob and I. I also purchased a nice basket and will put in a couple of bottles of wine for the auction.
I called Christopher this morning and he came out with Bob tonight after work. I had dinner ready when they arrived and then Bob and I left for our bike ride. He fixed my computer for me, so I am happy. Going up the McKay Highway near the Ultramar, I got a flat. The pump we are using is more for mountain bike tires and it was hard to get the pressure up. WE both gave it a go and were exhausted. I ended up driving the remainder of the trip on an "underinflated" tire. We did our planned route, Bonney Road, Hammond River and Stockfarm, only in reverse direction tonight. The drive along the Hammond River was beautiful with the sun setting and reflecting across the hills and valleys. Almost 3 D like. Then we had the steep climb up the Stockfarm, which I think I prefer!! We did the 51 km ride again, but were 2 minutes slower tonight....oh well.
We ran into a fellow cyclist, Dan Sleep, at the ferry landing and we chatted as we hadn't seen him on the bike prior this season. Hopefully he will join us on the Wednesday night ride.
I received a cheque from an old friend, Debi Price towards the B for B tour and another one from a friend of my mom's, Betty Zwicker. Thank you both!!!

Showery Saturday

Yesterday afternoon Judy called to come over for tea, and Diane joined us so we had an "informal" meeting of the Sew What guild. At one point Diane jumped to look out the window because she saw an unfamiliar sight.....brightness with a flicker of the sun and a bit of blue sky. Judy left to rush home to her garden. Diane and I went to her home to play a game of scrabble.....with me being victorious.

Well, we were blessed in that the rain held off, again, and Bob and I left just before 6 for a ride. Due to the unpredictablility of the weather we donned our rain jackets, just in case. We did a nice ride through Stockfarm Rd. and followed the Hammond River leading back through the Bonney Road and back to the old McKay before heading up through Meenan's Cove Rd. It was pleasant and great to be riding after such a week of wet weather. I "bonked" coming up the back of Meenan's Cove, but was close enough to home to be able to keep a good pace. I was mentally preparing dinner, figuring out what we had in the fridge and how long it would take to prepare. When you are ravenous, timing is important!! We arrived home shortly after 8 having done 52 km in just over two hours, almost reaching our goal of 24 km per hour.
The rain started again shortly after our return.
Today is Saturday, and the weather.....muggy and wet. Supposed to be that way for the next two days. I am going to work, and hopefully we can find a break in weather around 5 to get out for a ride when I get home.

Rainy, dreary Friday

Well, our training seems to have come to a halt......the weather being just too miserable to ride. I don't mind driving through rain, now and again, BUT the heavy onslaughts that we are experiencing are NOT pleasant to cycle in. Visibility becoming a big problem as well as slippery conditions. I suppose we better get used to it, just in case this is waht we are to expect for 62 days this summer!! Yikes. Not the envision I have in mind when I think about cycling this great country. I see blue skies, sunshine, green trees, flowers, picturesque lakes, mountains, prairies.....all in sunshine. That picture changes dramatically when it is rainy and wet!!
Am not sleeping too well at night with lots of mental preparation and the reality that I will be putting my charished pet of 14 1/2 years, Jessi, to sleep before we depart. I think that she has had a great life and now has a cancer growth which must be bothering her. The original plan was to have my parents take care of her while we would be on our journey, however I feel that me being away from her for 10 weeks would be hard on her, she would be wondering "where is my mom"???... Although her care isn't too much, with this growth and keeping it clean and getting up at 5:30 each morning to get her out might be too much for my parents, who are 82 and 80. I wouldn't want them to worry about her either, and for my part I would be cycling every day wondering how everyone was.
Also to add to the mental stress the computer seems to be experincing difficulty. I cannot access the wireless network. This all happened after we experienced a power outage on Monday. Once the power returned and I realized that I couldn't get on line through wireless, I called the tech help line. Man, that poor guy on the other end must have thought "what a wing nut"... because after an hour trying to understand what he was explaining I ended up hanging up in tears due to frustration. The next morning I fiddled around and voila, I had wireless again. Then last night, the computer seemed to go ascrew again and now, once again, I have no wireless. We had planned on bringing the laptop along on our journey so I could keep in touch, but now with this wireless issue, I don't know what will happen. I don't want these "frustrations" to interfere with the purpose of the trip, nor cause added and undue stress.
Man, what ever happened to just "on and off" switches. I really like the KISS principle. Wouldn't it be ideal if you could just switch off and when you turned back on, everything was fixed!!

Wednesday night ride, June 7, 2006

We arrived at the Gondola Point beach parking lot to prepare for the Wednesday night ride when Bob discovered he had forgotton his shoes at home. Dorothy, Glen, Barb, Simon and I waited for his return before setting out. Carole was tied up at work, so wasn't coming. George had hollered down from his "condo balcony" to say we were going to be rained upon, therefore he wasn't coming. Wimp. We debated on a route as we cycled along and decided to try our usual 40 km ride along the back of the Bellisle, Erb's Cove, Gagnon Road, Warden Road and back to the ferry. The weather was good for cycling, traffic light and it was an enjoyable ride. Normally we would stop to eat at the Riverview Pub, but when George called to say we would be coming, he was advised that the kitchen was closing at 8. I guess they aren't interested in our business anymore.....the former management welcomed us and we had a great menu. The current managers have been operating for the past year. Menu is more limited and they are not as welcoming. I guess their regular "poker" night take precedent over feeding and serving other customers!! Oh well, their loss. As it was, we arrived back at the ferry landing around 8:05 and headed to the Old Barnwood in Quispamsis for dinner. Once we had our beer and were placing our order, we discovered that the Pub's kitchen was closed and we had to order from the Pizza Delight menu. Next time we will remember that and just go to Pizza Delight, as it is licensed.

Quick Chick Ride, Tuesday June 6

Another good turn, 23 gals, out on Tuesday night for the "girlie" ride. Most of the women are triatheletes, so are in great shape and they love to spin along, as if they are participating in a race. I am sure the motorists must find it a bit frustrating passing such a large group. Once out of the town, we can find a quiet back road where there is little to no traffic and a much more enjoyable ride as we can chat with different people along the route. Coming back along the Old McKay Highway seems to become the race course as we jockey for position. It is along this stretch that I like to "work" a bit harder, as we pick up the pace and spin along in top gear. Lots of fun. Following the ride we congregate at the Irving Big Stop on Dolan Road, for something to eat, to chat and get to know one another a bit better. Lots of fun. Our distance tonight was 35.77 km and average speed was 23.6. Now I have 1635.8 km on my odomoter for the season. A little behind where I want to be, but that's ok.

Monday, June 5. Nervous in the rain

Well, about 5 minutes ago, at 8:30 p.m. I do believe that I saw something that resembled clear sky and perhaps the sun? Doesn't matter because it has since disappered and the grey clouds and drizzle has returned.
It didn't clear at all today although Diane and I managed to get a nice walk in just after lunch. I had done some sewing earlier in the morning as well as some office work. Bob arrived home shortly after 4 and we set out for a ride, heading towards Darlings Island. I had to stop by my friend, Judy's house to pick up some "donations" that she had collected for me from some of Holy Trinity's ACW and John's Girls. Thank you to Karen, Phyllis and Vi. On the way, the rain began shortly after we began the ascend up the Arterial. At first I was yanging because I had the rain jacket on and I felt that I was going to be too warm....not so, within 2 minutes the rain began and the jacket was just right. Driving on the roads close to suppertime isn't the greatest idea as there is more traffic and with the rain visibility isn not great. What is it with the driver's this year? They seem to have no respect for cyclists....they do lay on the horn, but unfortunately they DO NOT LAY on their brakes!! They zip by you and in most cases end up forcing the oncoming car over. Do they not realize that they should SLOW DOWN and wait for a clear opportunity to get by the cyclist?? As a cyclist I do respect the car and its' driver. I try to stay over to the edge as far as I possibly can. But, on a cyclist's behalf, our road bike tires are only 1 inch wide. They do not roll over potholes, bumps, sand, dirt or manhole covers easily. I am fortunate that my mountain bike experience has allowed me to hit the dirt when necessary and in most cases I can recover and stay upright. Tonight I was forced to the side by 3 cars and I hit fresh sand that had rolled down to the road from several driveways due to the recent rains. I slipped and slid through it figuring I was going to teeter over but managed to recover but not without a bit of a fright and hollering at a lady in a red van, calling her an asshole. It seems that women are the worst offenders!!! I am going to have to curb my outbreaks for when I am on the BFB tour!!
We stopped at Darling's Island Bike store and picked up two new water bottle cages and an adapter to put behind my seat. This should enable me to carry 4 water bottles at a time during our trip. Hopefully it will suffice?? They are suggesting that we carry a hydration packs (Camalback's) but I prefer not to. I used to wear one when I mountain biked and I found it just too cumbersome and hot. I can also carry two extra (store bought) bottles in my front saddle bag. Anyhow, when we left the store to head home the heaven's opened and the rain came. We had warmed up somewhat when we were in the store, so quickly got chilled. I stopped at the bottom of the hill to put on my arm warmers and it made a big difference. I warmed up almost immediately. I will admit that I did ride nervously in the rain, especially going down the hills. I am hoping that this fear will pass!! Perhaps it is delayed reaction to my fall 3 weeks ago??
Tomorrow is another day......perhaps the sun will shine??

Rainy Days, Sunday June 4, 2006

Well, another weekend come and gone and it still continues to rain. Will it ever end? My back yard looks like a pond and my plants stick out like lily pads. The only thing missing are the frogs.... Obviously we didn't get out for any bike training on Saturday or Sunday.
Bob arrived home last night from Nova Scotia where he had been the past week staying with his mother while his father was in hospital. His dad is home now and things are going well. His sister, Sharon, is also down from Ontario to be with them.
Today, after church and our following meeting place at Tim's, Bob and I went shopping...ugh, to try to find some of the things still needed for our trip. I was successful in finding an inexpensive pair of track pants and some articles for my travel bag. Bob went grocery shopping while I was at Sear's.
We stopped by to visit with Chris and Claudine following. We had tea served in neat little ceramic cups. They were quite unique in design and size. Never before have I had 10 cups of tea in one sitting!! Chris navigated around this blog showing us some of the features of the site and the capabilities for our future use. Following Claudine showed us the pictures they took during their recent trip to Boston. It is always fun to visit with them. We saw their kitties, Kuan and Mineu (sp?) who seem so content and settled now. Quite a difference from when they first moved to the apartment.
Then it was back home in the torrential rain; the water on the highway being unreal. We did pass one lonely cyclist along the Old Rothesay Road. He actually looked quite content...or perhaps it was a grimace permanently planted on his face?

Adventures with Jill and Carole, June 2, 2006

By chance I called Carole at work to discover she had the day off. Wonderful!! I called her at home and like a miracle she answered (Carole isn't the greatest at answering her phone). We chatted for a bit and then made plans to do a ride. I finished my chores, ugh...and then cycled down to her place. We set off close to 2, cycled to Dr. Jason Saunder's office where I picked out some cycling glasses for the cross Canada trip. Carole said "they are beautiful". I think she looks at everything through rose coloured glasses, lucky gal. I think I look like the Hansen brothers from the movie Slapshot done in the 70's. From there it was out the Hampton Highway to our first stop at the Ultramar for a popsicle and pit stop. Then on to the Bonney Road, through the Smithtown covered bridge and then a back road that brought us out through First, Second and Third Lakes....through Baxter's Corner, Upper Loch Lomond. It was great riding, weather just right. We stopped at the Ultramar by the airport for more water before heading back home via Churchland Road to the Arterial. We parted company at the bottom of Grove Ave. and I came home to put supper on as I invited Carole to join me later. So, as for training we did a 77.97 ride in 3 hours and 34 minutes. It was more of a leisurly pace which I really enjoyed. A very pleasant afternoon.
